16 year old boy and Laser pointer induced maculopathy

ABSTRACT

Background:

We report a case of laser pointer maculopathy treated with anti-VEGF(Avastin).

Method:

Case report:

16 year old boy presented with decrease vision after exposure to Infra-red laser pointer.

Result:

The patients best corrected visual acuity on presentation was Hand movements in the affected eye. Fundus examination showed foveal lesion. OCT and FFA was done which showed minimally classic CNV formation. After discussing risks and benefits the patient was treated with anti-VEGF (Avastin) single dose. Final visual acuity improving to 6/15.

Conclusion:

Laser injuries are hazardous to eyes if abused resulting in maculopathy which can eventually lead to permanent damage.
